the rowers greasy spoon index

It's well known that every rower's second most favourite thing (next to beer), is the traditional post weekend outing fry-up. Everyone has their favourite 'greasy spoon' near to their club and generally an alternative in case it's too busy or closed.

A couple of years ago, Liz Wray from Tickenham Rowing Club (UK), found herself and a fellow rower wandering round Wallingford on a Sunday morning looking in vain for somewhere to fill up on bacon and eggs ("to console ourselves after finding that we couldn't row because of a lack of riggers"). Alas, their search was fruitless and reluctantly they resorted to eating dry croissants from Waitrose. On the way back to their trailer, they pondered the idea of a place to find out where one could get a good fry-up when traveling outside of Twickenham, so this page is an attempt to start up what can only be an invaluable service to the rowing community.

With the demise of the Twickenham Underground site in the Spring of 1999, Liz was looking for a new home for the Greasy Spoon Index. Albany Rowing Center played host to the site for a couple of years before it moved across the river. All of us RPI alumni love a good fry-up as much as the rest, so we took over the site.

Obviously, we're reliant on rowers sending in their recommendations, so please let us know your local cafe and don't worry if you don't have all the details, a name and rough location will suffice.
